Summarize in ChatGPT
The quarterly link building invoice lands the same week somebody forwards you a study claiming brand mentions predict AI visibility three times better than backlinks do. The invoice is real money. The study is one correlation coefficient. You have to decide what to do about both before the budget meeting.
The brand mentions vs backlinks framing makes that decision harder than it needs to be, because the two signals do different jobs. Mentions establish that your brand exists and what it’s known for. Links vouch for it. AI search platforms use both, and Semrush counts them among the three off-page trust signals models reference before citing a source.
How much of each you need depends on which platform you’re trying to show up in.
What Each One Actually Is, and Why They’re Not Interchangeable
A backlink is a clickable link from another site pointing at your page. It carries authority from the host domain and gives crawlers a path to follow.
A brand mention is any reference to your brand name, trademark, product, or service anywhere on the web, including social platforms, forums, YouTube transcripts, and AI-generated answers. Mentions come in two forms:
- Linked mentions, where the brand name sits inside anchor text pointing to your site
- Unlinked mentions, where the brand name appears as plain text with nothing clickable attached
The structural difference is obvious. The functional one matters more. A link is a machine-readable vote with almost no semantic content. The HTML tells a model that one page points at another, and little else. A mention is text. It sits next to other words, in a sentence, on a page about a topic, which means it carries information about what your brand does and who it competes with.
That’s the split. Links tell a model your page is trusted. Mentions tell it what your page is trusted for.
How AI Search Reads Mentions Differently Than Google Ever Did
Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands and measured which off-page signals track with appearing in Google’s AI Overviews. Branded web mentions came in at a 0.664 Spearman correlation. Referring domains, the classic backlink metric, came in at 0.218. A follow-up study extended the analysis to ChatGPT and Google AI Mode and found YouTube mentions correlated highest of anything tested, around 0.737. Number of pages on the site landed at 0.194, so publishing more content doesn’t move this particular needle.
Ryan Law, Ahrefs’ content director, has traced this to how models read text around a brand name. Which terms co-occur, how often, and in what context. An unlinked mention next to your category terms teaches a model an association. A nofollow attribute teaches it nothing.
Classic search worked the opposite way. Links were the dominant trust signal, unlinked mentions passed almost no ranking value, and so nobody built a budget line for them. Teams optimized for the signal that paid.
These are correlations, and the strongest competing explanation is brand size. Large brands get mentioned more and linked more, and they also get cited more. Ahrefs filtered for domains above DR 40 and keywords above 800 monthly searches, so the sample skews toward companies that already have both signals in place. The data supports investing in mentions. It doesn’t prove that buying mentions produces citations on its own.
Why Backlinks Still Carry Weight in AI Search
Semrush ran a separate study with Kevin Indig across 1,000 domains, tracking mentions on ChatGPT, ChatGPT with Search, Gemini, AI Overviews, and Perplexity. Three findings change how a link campaign should be built:
- Authority beats volume, and the gains cluster at the top. Domains with stronger backlink authority get mentioned more often in AI answers, but the meaningful lift shows up only once a site reaches the higher authority tiers. Fifty links from weak domains and one from a strong one aren’t the same purchase.
- Nofollow performs about the same as follow, with similar correlation values for both. A nofollow placement on a credible publication is worth accepting, and the standard practice of walking away from one costs coverage for no measurable return.
- Image links hold up as well as text links. Once a site has some authority, image-based backlinks showed correlations at least as strong as text links, which means logo placements and infographic credits count for more than most link policies assume.
Links also stay in the picture through rankings. Seer Interactive found backlink quantity correlated at 0.10 with ChatGPT mentions while first-page Google rankings correlated at 0.65, which points to links working through organic position rather than directly on the model. Rankings feed the citation set, so the link spend arrives one step removed.
How Mentions and Backlinks Reinforce Each Other
Links Handle Discovery, Mentions Handle Description
A crawler needs a route to your page and a model needs a reason to associate your brand with a category. Links do the first job. Mentions do the second. A brand with both gets found and gets understood, which is why digital PR earns its line item: a single earned placement often produces a link, a named mention, and a co-citation alongside your competitors in the same paragraph.
Each Signal Fails on Its Own
Mentions without links don’t build domain authority, so the pages you want cited stay weak in organic search, which weakens the ranking pathway that feeds AI Overviews.
Links without mentions look transactional. Reasoning rather than published data here, but a site that links to you and never names you outside that link is the exact pattern link spam classifiers exist to catch. Earned coverage produces both together. Bought coverage usually produces one.
Where to Put Your Effort
Brand maturity decides the split, and the correlation data points to specific surfaces.
Where Newer Brands Should Start
Start with mentions and target ChatGPT. It shows the weakest relationship with traditional authority metrics in the Ahrefs data, with domain rating at 0.266, which makes it the most reachable surface for a brand without a link profile.
Getting named in roundups, podcasts, and YouTube videos moves that faster than a link campaign will.
Where Established Brands Should Defend
AI Mode is the surface to protect. It correlates highest with branded authority signals, including branded anchors at 0.628, so the work is holding link quality and keeping branded search volume up.
How to Track Both Signals
Split the tooling by signal, because none of it covers both sides cleanly.
- Ahrefs, Semrush, or Google Search Console for backlinks
- Brand Radar, Brand24, or Mention for web and social references
- Brand Radar or the Ahrefs YouTube index for video mentions, given where YouTube landed in the correlation data
Reporting is where most teams lose this. Link metrics and AI visibility move on different timelines, and averaging them into one dashboard number hides which spend is working.
Digital PR agencies like 321 Web Marketing map a brand’s current AI visibility and build the mention and link mix around where that brand actually sits.
Your Off-Page Audit for This Quarter
Five questions to run before the next dollar gets allocated:
- Are our best links from credible, high authority domains, or do we have volume from weak ones?
- Where are our mentions happening, and are any of them on YouTube?
- Which brands get mentioned or linked alongside ours, and is that the competitive set we want?
- Which high authority site mentioned us recently without a link, or with a nofollow we declined?
- What are we using to monitor both signals, and who reads the report?
The answers usually reveal one gap that’s cheaper to close than the rest. Start there.
321 Web Marketing builds digital PR campaigns around both signals, with reporting that separates AI visibility from organic performance so you can see which spend is working. Schedule a meeting to get started.
