Summarize in ChatGPT
A page ranks third for its head term and gets cited in Google’s AI Overview for that query. The same page never surfaces in ChatGPT, which answers the buyer’s question using a competitor’s pricing page that ranks fortieth. Both outcomes are normal.
Each platform picks its sources by a different route. Google AI Overviews are built on Google’s existing index, so crawl access, internal linking, and organic visibility gate everything downstream. ChatGPT with Search starts from a conversation, rewrites the prompt into a narrower query, and pulls the passage that resolves it.
One content program serves both platforms. The measurement has to stay separate.
How Google AI Overviews Work
Google starts with the same infrastructure that crawls and indexes standard web pages. A page has to be available in Search before it can appear as a supporting source.
What Has to Be True Before a Page Is Eligible?
A page blocked from crawling has an access problem, not a content problem. An important page buried four clicks deep is hard for Google to find. Both fixes live in crawl access and site structure, which makes this an SEO foundation question rather than an AI tactic.
Internal links tell Google which page holds the main answer. A service page linked only from the footer sends a weaker signal than one connected from related articles and service-area pages. Link volume matters less than giving the important page an obvious place in the site.
How Often Do AI Overviews Actually Appear?
Less often than the noise suggests, and far more often on the queries that matter to a B2B seller. Pew Research Center tracked the real browsing behavior of 900 U.S. adults across 68,879 Google searches in March 2025.
| Query type | Produced an AI summary |
| All searches | 18% |
| One or two words | 8% |
| Ten or more words | 53% |
| Opens with a question word | 60% |
| Full sentence, noun and verb | 36% |
The average buries the finding. Nobody researching a considered purchase types two words; they type a full question, which puts B2B research queries at the top of that range rather than the middle.
For a company selling a $50,000 engagement, 18% is a floor.
Two limits on the data are worth stating. Pew’s panel is general consumers rather than B2B buyers, and the fieldwork is from March 2025, since which AI Overview coverage has moved. The gradient still travels better than the rate.
Do Rankings Still Decide Citations?
They matter, and they matter less than they did a year ago. Ahrefs analyzed 863,000 keywords and 4 million AI Overview URLs and found that 38% of cited pages also ranked in the top 10 for the same query, down from 76% seven months earlier.
| Where cited pages rank for the same query | Share of citations |
| Top 10 | 38% |
| Positions 11 to 100 | 31.2% |
| Below position 100 | 31.0% |
Query fan-out is the mechanism. Google breaks a query into related sub-queries and pulls from pages ranking well across those, which is how a page sitting at position 40 for the original term ends up cited. Ranking for one head term is a weaker bet than ranking across the cluster around it.
The counterweight belongs in the same breath. SeoClarity’s analysis of 432,000 keywords found that 97% of AI Overviews cite at least one source from the top 20, and position-one pages appear more than half the time.
Ranking improves citation odds without securing them. Both findings hold at once, and a strategy built on either one alone will be wrong.
Does Schema Markup Improve AI Citations?
This is where the evidence pushes against common practice. Ahrefs tracked 1,885 pages that added JSON-LD between August 2025 and March 2026 and matched them against 4,000 control pages.
| Platform | Citation change after adding schema |
| Google AI Overviews | −4.6% |
| Google AI Mode | +2.4% |
| ChatGPT | +2.2% |
The two positive figures are small enough to be noise, and the scope matters more than any of the three numbers. Every page studied already had 100 or more AI Overview citations before schema was added, so the tested claim is narrow. Adding JSON-LD to a page AI already cites produces no short-term lift, and the study says nothing about a page starting from zero.
The mechanism explains the result. In direct retrieval tests, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode pulled visible HTML and ignored JSON-LD, Microdata, and RDFa. The words a reader sees are the words the system reads.
Keep structured data accurate and matched to visible content, because it still drives rich results and entity recognition. Don’t budget it as a citation lever.
Which Pages Should a Service Company Review First?
Informational questions still dominate, and AI Overviews now appear on comparison and purchase-stage searches too. That puts cost pages and comparison pages in scope alongside educational articles.
Page type should follow the decision behind the query:
- A cost query needs a page explaining what moves the price
- A comparison query needs a stated basis for choosing
- A general service query needs the overview that routes to both
Split pages when the intent changes. That gives each one a defined job and makes internal linking easier to plan.
How ChatGPT with Search Works
ChatGPT rewrites the user’s prompt before it searches, then refines the search as it works through the question. It builds its own answer from the results it reviews.
That rewrite step is what changes the planning. A buyer asks about migrating from one software platform to another, and ChatGPT searches for cost first, then for the main implementation concern.
The page that gets cited may be found through wording that never appeared in the original prompt.
What Makes a Page Match the Rewritten Query?
Clear titles and self-contained sections. The title decides whether a result looks relevant before the full page gets reviewed, and “Implementation Costs for Midmarket Teams” signals more than “What You Need to Know.” State the decision the page resolves.
Long-form content performs well here, and length isn’t the reason. A section earns citations when it answers one question without depending on distant parts of the article. Keeping a claim and its evidence together is what citation structure means in practice.
The ranking gap usually shows up when a strong page spreads one answer across four separated paragraphs.
How Much Does the Outside Brand Record Matter?
Enough to measure, and the evidence is correlational rather than causal. Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands and found branded web mentions correlate at 0.664 with AI Overview visibility, against 0.218 for backlinks.
That’s a real signal and it isn’t a formula, since well-known brands earn mentions and citations for overlapping reasons. Treat the brand record as evidence that consistency across credible sites is worth the effort.
For ChatGPT specifically the ground is thinner. OpenAI hasn’t published mentions as a ranking factor, so this stays a plausible theory rather than established practice. What’s certain is that conflicting service descriptions make a company harder to identify, whatever the retrieval path.
What Technical Check Matters Most?
Crawler access, and it’s the one most sites miss. A site can perform normally in Google while blocking that crawler through a robots.txt rule or a firewall setting. Nothing in Google Search Console will surface it, because the crawler belongs to a different company.
How the Two Platforms Compare
The divergence happens before anything gets cited. Google works from pages already sitting in its index. ChatGPT starts from the conversation and builds a narrower search before it selects a source.
| Google AI Overviews | ChatGPT with Search | |
| Source pool | Google’s existing index | Search results returned for a rewritten query |
| Query the page must match | The one typed, plus fan-out sub-queries | The one ChatGPT wrote, often not the one typed |
| Citations per answer | 88% cite more than three sources | Frequently fewer, sometimes one |
| Trigger control | Google decides whether an Overview appears | May answer from model knowledge without searching |
| Format rewarded | A passage that fits, on a page that holds up after the click | A section that stands alone with its evidence attached |
| Freshness weighting | Older pages persist while facts hold | Invoked when current information would improve the answer |
| Authority signal | Links help the system assess pages and relationships | No published authority score; links aid discovery |
| Local handling | Business Profiles anchor visibility | Approximate location plus third-party listing sources |
Where the Differences Actually Bite
Source selection is the one that changes daily work. Google’s index defines the eligible set, so strong organic visibility improves the odds because the page already earned its position. ChatGPT chooses among returned pages, so the citation depends on a query the buyer never typed.
Testing has to account for both. Results shift between responses on either platform, so one screenshot proves nothing, and ChatGPT answers from stored knowledge whenever it judges that sufficient. Record whether live search fired before judging citation performance.
Format is where most pages lose. Google needs a passage that fits the query while the full page still serves a buyer who clicks. ChatGPT rewards sections that stand alone, which means keeping the answer and its evidence together and skipping the summary paragraph after every header.
What This Means for Your Marketing Strategy
The first budget decision follows how buyers find the company today. A local service firm gets more immediate return from Google, where a search turns into a phone call. A national company needs real attention on ChatGPT, because buyers use it earlier in the research process.
Both platforms need the same underlying asset: a page that answers a real buyer question, cites its sources near the claims they support, and is easy to reach through internal links. That work belongs inside the main content program, not beside it.
The follow-up tasks diverge. Google work usually starts with an indexing problem or a weak location page. ChatGPT work usually starts with a section that can’t stand alone or a crawler block.
How Does GEO Fit With Existing SEO?
Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is the layer that connects those tasks to work already underway. SEO builds the site conditions that let Google find and assess a page. GEO adds the testing that shows how the brand appears in AI answers.
Run them as one program. GEO and SEO share a content base, and only the measurement stays separate.
Where Should the Budget Go?
| $5M, one metro | $30M, national | |
| Lead platform | Both, weighted to ChatGPT for research-stage queries | |
| First investment | Business Profile and local SEO plan | Comparison content and GEO services |
| Proof the work landed | Calls from search | Mentions measured before the site visit |
| Second platform | Check quarterly on a smaller budget | Maintain the Google foundation |
What Is a Citation Actually Worth?
Be clear-eyed here. Pew found that users clicked a traditional search result in 8% of visits where an AI summary appeared, against 15% of visits where none did, and clicked a link inside the summary itself 1% of the time.
A citation is brand exposure at the moment of research. It isn’t a traffic channel, and any plan that budgets it as one will come up short at the end of the quarter.
That’s why page-level and brand-level wins need separate lines in the report. A page citation means one source matched the response, while a brand mention means the system connected the company to the topic.
How Should Citations Show Up in Reporting?
Citation rate is a lead measure, since it moves before lead volume does. Qualified leads are the lag measure that shows whether the visibility reached a buyer worth having.
Keeping them apart stops a team from reporting a citation increase as a revenue win six weeks before the sales data can confirm it. The two also move independently, so a third-party article can mention the company while its own pages stay absent from citations.
Run a Quarterly Visibility Test
Start with buyer questions pulled from sales calls, because those reflect the decisions the platforms are being asked to resolve. Choose prompts that represent a real decision. A question about implementation timing benchmarks better than a request for a general overview.
- Assign one intended page to each prompt before running the test. If a different page appears, the site is sending mixed signals about which page owns the topic.
- Run the prompt in Google. Record whether an AI Overview appeared, which pages it cited, and where those pages rank in standard results.
- Run the same prompt in ChatGPT. Record whether live search fired before logging the citation, which keeps current visibility separate from what the model already knew.
- Hold conditions steady. Same account settings, same location, and log the date, because platform behavior shifts between reviews.
- Assign one change per finding. A page missing from Google’s index needs an access fix. A page ChatGPT finds but doesn’t cite needs a clearer section.
Repeat the same prompt set each quarter. Add prompts when sales conversations surface a new buyer concern. Keeping the core questions constant is what makes quarter-over-quarter comparison mean anything.
What to Fix Between Tests
- Check the first sentence under every header. It should answer the question the header implies, then let the following sentences add proof and context.
- Reconcile outside references. A service description that conflicts across directories weakens confidence in the business details. Fix the conflict before pursuing more mentions.
- Keep schema accurate and matched to visible content. Add FAQ or HowTo markup where it reflects what’s on the page, and treat it as search hygiene rather than a citation tactic.
- Publish comparisons worth citing. A page that restates product descriptions gives a retrieval system nothing original to pull. A stronger comparison names the deciding factor and shows how it changes the choice.
